Character Name: Arietta Flynn
Race: Arietta comes from a race of dark elves that branched from the Tarnall. These elves became corrupted after meddling with dark magic. After realizing what they had done, it was too late, so they cast themselves into exile, living the rest of their lives underground, only surfacing at night when needed.
Appearance: Arrietta usually wears dark, brooding colors that cover her almost completely. She takes special care in covering her arms, which are horribly disfigured due to an incantation incident. Because of the alien liquid in her body her physique is rather undernourished. She has the usual onyx colored skin her people are recognized for, with deep amber colored eyes. The thing that strikes her out from the rest is her intense red hair, which acquired that unusual color right after the incident. It wasn’t instant. The color began to intensify throughout the years.
Profession: Student of Magik and Occult Researcher. The element attuned to her is earth, and though it might be considered the element of stability, in her case it leans more toward stubbornness.
Hobbies: Arietta enjoys researching occult phenomena as well as sculpting whenever she has free time, which helps her unwind.
Hometown: The City of Sin’Nyx in Barathrum
Main Language: Barochi
Personality: Arietta can be rather intense and profound. Even when she appears self-controlled and calm there is a seething intensity of emotional energy under her placid exterior. Much like a volcano not far under the surface of a calm sea, which may burst into eruption at any moment. But those who are particularly perceptive will be aware of the harnessed aggression, the immense forcefulness, magnetic intensity, and often strangely hypnotic personality under her tranquil, but watchful composure.
In her everyday behavior she gives the appearance of being withdrawn from the center of activity, yet those who know her will recognize the watchfulness that is part of her character. Her tenacity and willpower are immense, her depth of character and passionate conviction overwhelming, yet she is deeply sensitive and easily moved by her emotions. Her sensitivity, together with a propensity for extreme likes and dislikes make her easily hurt, quick to detect insult or injury (often when none is intended) and easily aroused to ferocious anger. This may express itself in such destructive speech or action that this might make lifelong enemies by her outspokenness, for she finds it difficult not to be overly critical of anything or anyone to whom she may dislike.
She can be too demanding and too unforgiving of faults in others; Perhaps because she is not aware of the shortcomings within herself, and extravagantly expresses her self-disgust in unreasonable resentment against her fellows. She does, however, make excellent friends, provided that her companions do nothing to impugn the honor of which she is very jealous.
Brooding resentment, aggressive and sadistic brutality, total arrogance, morbid jealousy, extreme volatility of temperament, these are some of her vices. Her inner intensity can express itself in the spiritual fervor of the mystic or the conceivably thaumaturgic.
Other: Arietta Flynn was born to Hayrik and Ewka Flynn. Her father served as a Consult for The Council of Sin’Nyx, and was rarely with his family during Arietta's childhood. She would hear her father addressing members of the council in tongues she did not understand. Arietta picked up her affinity for languages during this period, and shows a level of understanding of Old Elven tongue as well as some Orcish.
Arietta loves her mother, yet hates her father, who she claims has an odd moral understanding. She desperately avoids both her parents. When confronted with why she does, she usually turns and totally disregards the question. She once confessed to an old childhood friend that her father abused her as a child. She hasn’t mentioned it to her mother for fear of causing her heartache.
Arietta studied sorcery with an elder who once formed part of The Council, but after retiring decided to teach others of the arcane. That was, until a classmate falsely reported Arietta for stealing one of the elder’s books. After being excluded from the study group, she began to research anything that had to do with the occult by herself. Her thirst for knowledge grew, and the city of Sin’Nyx had no more to offer her. At least not on the subject she quenched for.
Leaving the underground was not unheard of, but rarely did dark elves return. This of course struck fear in the people that had called the underground home for so long. The first time Arietta heard of the floating island called Berith was after overhearing her father talk to his colleagues about the school located on it. This stirred curiosity in her and in the next few years she did as much research on the outside world as she could.
Before she decided to leave Sin’ Nyx, Arietta would practice spells found in scrolls and totems stolen from her father’s study. As she practiced an incantation with Runako, an old friend and companion, he let a mercury like substance spill on her arms, which went unchecked for days. Unknown to her, since it was showing no signs of anything out of the ordinary, it was causing her blood to clot from her elbow, down to her fingertips. Once it had no where else to go, as if it had a mind of it’s own, the silver liquid exploded out through her pores, severely burning and disfiguring her arms, leaving them virtually useless. She endured excruciating pain through shamanic treatment to retain the use of her arms. Arietta could never forgive Runako, so their relationship ended.
Her crankiness is commonly attributed to the chronic pain in her arms, for which she requires them to be bandaged with special oils, and changed daily. For her chronic pain Arietta lacerates immature seedpods of opium poppies, which she serves herself in a drink religiously.
Relationships: Runako was a childhood friend, which also shared an infatuation toward Arietta. The relationship was abruptly put to an end after an incident that crippled her arms.
Goals: Her interests in summoning and opening portals to different planes to the extent of “borrowing” scrolls or tomes is due to the parasitic quicksilver that’s slowly taking control of her body. She knows that her father was delving in dangerous magik and she’s resentful about it, often times blaming him for her current dilemma, even though most of it is due to her thirst for hidden knowledge.
